I was born in Iloilo City, Philippines and came to live in New York in Midtown Manhattan when I was 5 years old. At the time, I was very fluent in the Filipino languages and had to learn English growing up. Often as kids, we look up to our parents and follow in their footsteps. From my father’s side, there are Politicians and Lawyers, although my father’s passion is mathematics and he turned out to be a CPA; And from my mother’s side, there are many Physicians and Nurses, so I decided to become a Physician and because I didn’t want to read tons of Law books. My mom decided to become a Pharmacist, even though she had all of my grandfather’s medical books at her disposal. Cutting bodies up, terrifies me, so I settled for Nursing. I was a Student Nurse all through high school. When my high school internship was finished in 1988, I looked to the Help Wanted section of The New York Times and found a job as an assistant at a hair salon which I helped in shampooing hair, sweeping the floor, removing the rollers from the senior ladies and assisted with hair extensions. It was then I decided that the salon was for me. Many of the salon customers protested that
“Nursing is better than being a Hair Extensionist!”
But I didn’t pay them any mind because I knew what my passion was. I became a freelance hair extensionist after beauty school graduation in 1992 because no salons would hire me since they didn’t have clients who needed the service. Imagine that in the heart of New York City!
Once the Internet was born, I created a website for myself in 2000 discovered many people with the same interests. I never imagined that hair extensions would now become my full time career after many years of advertising in The Village
Voice and putting up my flyers in the Adult Entertainment joints with hardly any luck.
Some days I’d get calls from women who wanted hair extensions but their hair was too weak. So I loss them to hair replacement studios. That’s when I decided to take a class in hair replacement in 2002. In the class, I learned about all types of hairloss from male/female pattern baldness, alopecia, chemotherapy, radiation and trichotillomania. Now a graduate, I started offering “Hair Loss Solutions”.
The First Encounter With A Hair Pulling Disorder Client
In 2004, I received a phone call from a young woman who said she has trichotillomania and wanted me to consult her. I was very nervous. I didn’t know what to say or how to behave around her.
I kept thinking that since she pulls her own hair, she might pull on the hair piece.
We both decided to give it a chance and order a hairpiece. She would come in once a month and each time, her hair would start to grow back! Not only that, but her self confidence grew!
She was more happy, more confident, more than ever before! I could not believe it! I felt how I’ve always wanted to feel, not a “mere beautician” as my former customers at the old salon used to tell me; but a ‘hero’ like my grandfather, a Filipino US Army Surgeon who operated on the wounded soldiers in World War II. It felt great! Granted that one just needs a high school diploma to study Cosmetology!
Very quickly, the demand for my services grew taking over my hair extensions services. I would consult young girls as young as 8 years old who’s parent couldn’t afford the hairpieces. I would help my clients try to get insurance reimbursement without luck. I strongly believed that salon services helped my clients and the only way for us to get help was to get it ourselves! In February 2007, I bought the domain name HelpMe2Stop.org and after 21 months of waiting finally got approved as a non-profit on October 30, 2009.
HelpMe2Stop is now a turn-key organization and for more info, please visit HelpMe2Stop.org
